This set comes with one police officer figure that has a very detailed printed head and torso; he also has a white helmet. The officer is equipped with a pair of handcuffs and a pair of binoculars. The Police Helicopter itself is a simple, but very enjoyable build and when finished it looks genuinely like a real police chopper. The helicopter has a single seat cockpit for the officer with a control panel. The chopper is equipped with two cargo containers (one on each side) for the handcuffs and binoculars. The helicopter is also outfitted with a side-mounted video camera, and a search light located under the nose. Kids (and some adults, too; you know who you are…) will spend hours playing airport: sending travelers through grueling security checks (these are 21st century children, after all), boarding passengers and loading luggage, monitoring air traffic from the control tower, checking the engines of the airplane before take-off, spinning suitcases around the baggage carousel. For example, below the trays, there is enough space to fit the large flat plates. (You can even place the plates right above the trays.) In the trays themselves, the largest place holder could hold a 8 x 16 piece (if such size exists). The shape of the trays, combined with the space between them, makes it pretty much impossible for your child to pinch his or her fingers pulling in or out the trays. <br /><br />When my (just turned) 7 year old daughter and I first set the unit up, it was interesting to hear her think aloud about the best way to sort her collection of Lego bricks. Each of the four trays is sorted into nine sections, adding up to 36 sections, which may seem like a lot. However, when you consider all the different colors and brick purposes (eg. car pieces, house accessories), it becomes somewhat challenging. And it's that whole thought process, which I would label as being "educational". <br /><br />Cons:<br /><br />This Lego Storage Tray Unit is very solid and arguably attractive, but it seems overpriced. However, having said that, because I have yet to find any reasonable substitutes, I may very well buy another one! <br /><br />But if I don't, I'll have to buy SOMETHING because the reality is that the other downside with this storage unit is that it's somewhat small. Granted if I simply poured all of the Lego bricks my daughter owns into the trays, there would be a lot of extra room, but once you sort them, there are obviously sections that are not filled while others are overflowing.<br /><br />Bottom line:<br /><br />If nothing else, I would recommend purchasing this product as an auxiliary storage unit. We got this set for my 3 year old son a year ago and he is still playing with it on a daily basis. The set is geared towards younger children and does not have as many small pieces as some of the other sets. Also,the instructions have pictures of several other vehicles or variations that can be built with this set. My son cannot yet build these legos on his own but he is not far from it. He has watched my husband build and change the sets several times and will comment if you put something in the wrong place. He has built the steam roller on his own with some verbal instruction. The only problem we have had with this set is that the black piece that used to hold up the bulldozer shovel doesn't hold it up well anymore. The price on Amazon is terrible. However in terms of play it simply wasn't that exciting. The range of motion of the crane is limited, it simply goes up and down. For instance, it is especially tricky to attach the "cable" (thread supplied with kit) to the take-up reel, thread it through the pulley, and anchor it on the crane arm. As with most Lego toys, it's important that every assembly point be pressed tightly together, and for little hands that can be tricky sometimes.<br /><br />We've only had it assembled for a day so far, and although the pulley works as advertised to lift things, and the crawler treads do move as expected, the whole thing is not quite as solid as some other Lego toys. It's obvious that hand-cranking a pulley will put an unusually high amount of torque on the unit, and eventually the operator will end up with a handful of Lego pieces needing to be reassembled.<br /><br />To some extent, that goes with the territory with Lego toys, of course. You have to decide whether you're more interested seeing a big complex thing come together out of many small parts, which is educational and fun; or in actually trying to play with it as a genuine building and construction toy. For the latter purpose, most kids are better off with prebuilt trucks, cranes, or whatever. For instance, we still have old "Bob the Builder" (non-Lego!) toys that work just fine despite being tossed around, kicked, stepped on, etc. Smaller kids might be better off with that kind of toy for everyday play.<br /><br />Once it is completely built, the crawler crane is a pretty imposing size, larger than most of the other vehicles and toys in the "City" series. And when you're done playing for the day, where do you put it? Ha. We had bought a few small storage bins (similar in size to a typical Lego tub) to store other assembled Lego toys, and found that to be really valuable for a front-end loader, dump truck, etc.<br /><br />Well, this crane is way bigger than that. We also got a bigger plastic box (intended for storing shirts) -- but discovered that the crane is bigger than that, too. Finally we figured out that one can take the big crane arm apart without undoing the cable or anything else, and carefully store it in the box next to the main body of the toy. Next time it is wanted, the arm will simply snap onto four little pegs and it'll be ready to go.<br /><br />We haven't put this to the test of time of course, but in the first bit of play we noticed that the cab is fairly easy to knock off, for instance. Also, the crawler treads, being hard plastic, are slick and will not move if you're playing on any kind of slick surface -- and that includes the large Lego base plates which are also hard plastic. On a rug or towel or other rough surface, the treads can grip and will turn around their sprockets when you move the vehicle, just as they would on a real crawler crane. So, good design for those treads, but probably wasted in most play environments.<br /><br />The top part swivels easily, so you can use the crane and pulley to lift an item from one spot, turn and drop it somewhere else. However, note that the crane arm itself can NOT be raised or lowered by any user control (unlike the pulley handle). The arm is mounted on parts that *look like* pneumatic lifts, but they aren't functional.<br /><br />Still, overall it's a pretty neat toy, and if you want a somewhat complex assembly project without having to go to space (Star Wars) or some other esoteric setting, this fits the bill. Now that it's done, I think we're going to shift now to buying more sets of bricks and letting the kid invent stuff from scratch. As another reviewer noted, it'll be interesting to see if this crane gets modified with other parts by our young designer, after the initial exhilaration wears off.<br /><br />We paid slightly less than the "list" price on the Lego website, and that is quite a bit less than it's selling for today here on Amazon. When I looked at the finished toy and thought about the cost out-of-pocket, I felt that it was a just barely acceptable deal at list price or less. I was looking for a Lego product for my niece and found this on Amazon. Most local retail stores only have Lego geared more to the interest of boys. My niece enjoys to variety of play this product provides, with people, dog, car, and house. My only regret is that the Lego is a bit small with no moving parts. I have seen Lego with windows and doors that open and close. Of course, the Lego pieces were much larger and the end product would cost much more. For example, below the trays, there is enough space to fit the large flat plates. (You can even place the plates right above the trays.) In the trays themselves, the largest place holder could hold a 8 x 16 piece (if such size exists). The shape of the trays, combined with the space between them, makes it pretty much impossible for your child to pinch his or her fingers pulling in or out the trays. <br /><br />When my (just turned) 7 year old daughter and I first set the unit up, it was interesting to hear her think aloud about the best way to sort her collection of Lego bricks. Each of the four trays is sorted into nine sections, adding up to 36 sections, which may seem like a lot. However, when you consider all the different colors and brick purposes (eg. car pieces, house accessories), it becomes somewhat challenging. And it's that whole thought process, which I would label as being "educational". <br /><br />Cons:<br /><br />This Lego Storage Tray Unit is very solid and arguably attractive, but it seems overpriced. However, having said that, because I have yet to find any reasonable substitutes, I may very well buy another one! <br /><br />But if I don't, I'll have to buy SOMETHING because the reality is that the other downside with this storage unit is that it's somewhat small. Granted if I simply poured all of the Lego bricks my daughter owns into the trays, there would be a lot of extra room, but once you sort them, there are obviously sections that are not filled while others are overflowing.<br /><br />Bottom line:<br /><br />If nothing else, I would recommend purchasing this product as an auxiliary storage unit. It doesn't get five stars because when kids play with it, they have an easier time using the bucket when the faux hydraulic piston is not attached (you'll understand when you get the set). Still, it is a very attractive and useful toy with nice proportions. She wanted some Lego's too. Many of the movie themed sets are both expensive and complicated so I decided to get her (well them) the fireboat since it could double as a bath toy.<br /><br />Overview<br />This was my first "Lego city" kit and I was drawing from memories of a late 70's fire boat kit (which I still have the hull). Things have changed a lot sense then.<br /><br />From a build perspective this kit is a lot less complicated than the Star Wars kits (its rated for age 5-12 rather than 8+). It was beyond the ability of the 3 year old, she could follow and complete about 1/3 of it with direction. The 6 year old had no problem at all. Building it was an excellent family activity.<br /><br />The directions are pretty standard, they go from back to front, layer after layer. Layout and build is fairly straightforward. It's easy to understand what and where the parts you are building are for.<br /><br />The packing was also well organized. The project was divided into three sections, each with their own labeled bag. The first section was the hull, the second the control room, the third the water cannons. No one section had too many pieces. Building it was manageable in several sessions over a couple of days. Actual build time was a few hours but there was a bit of fighting over who got to do what part.<br /><br />Unlike the Star wars ships this boat had a much higher percentage of standard bricks and plates rather than super special parts that you have little hope of replacing if they get lost.<br /><br />It was a lot of fun and the finished product was a very functional toy. A number of the "appendages" like the crane and smaller water cannons probably need to be stripped of (because they will come off in play). But even without those it's a very neat boat.<br /><br />Features<br />This boat is loaded with features. What interested me the most was the hull. It's made of two pieces, the hull and the deck. The boat DOES float but it will take on water. The instructions indicate your able to remove the deck to dump the water but I found that it all comes out of the gap between the hull and the deck up front.<br /><br />I compared it to my 70's era fireboat hull, big difference. That hull came in 4 pieces (which was nice because you could break it down for storage). This hull is a lot longer and much wider. Another feature is that it has an outer flanges that look similar to Torpedo blisters. These are stabilizers. They expand the width of the boat and when in water trap pockets of air on each side to give it side to side stability. My old boat came with weights that you had to attach to the bottom or it would flip over because it was top heavy. The beauty of these is you don't have to change anything for in and out of water play. The deck has a recessed section in the middle to allow for more 3 dimensional building than a flat deck would.<br /><br />There is the buildup on the hull, major play items include the boat deck (which you can attach the included zodiac mini-boat to. The galley which has some sensor blocks and flip up sleeping compartment. The forward deck has a water cannon on it.<br /><br />The control room is built as a separate assembly and attached to the ship over the galley. It is configured in such a way that it is easy to pull on and off to access the Galley. It has a steering wheel and cool inverted windows. <br /><br />On the back is a water canon on a crane. It rotates 360 and goes up and down. There are also half a dozen other water cannons scattered across the ship on small mounts.<br /><br />It comes with 4 mini figures, a small zodiac boat and a cute buoy (doesn't float upright). <br />Everything can fit in or on the boat for storage.<br /><br />Playability<br />This boat has excellent playability. As I mentioned some of the protruding accessories will probably quickly be lost. But aside from that it's pretty solid. The control room can be removed and is well enough built to handle a bit of abuse. When the kids tire of fire adventures the hull has a lot of possibility for being reconfigured to a variety of tasks. The basic design of the structures on it are pretty good and would work for a variety of boat uses (Police boat, fishing boat, cargo boat, Patrol Boat). Just reconfigure the front and back areas.<br /><br />It got its baptism pretty early on after completion and it worked great in the tub and didn't retain too much water after being drained. Works well as a bath toy. You do have to remove the back crane assembly or it is a little bit top heavy and tends to roll in the water.<br /><br />So In Summary<br /><br />Pro's<br />Good Hull<br />Lots of playability<br />Well organized packing<br /><br />Con's<br />Some pieces easily come off.<br /><br />Conclusion<br />An excellent boat and toy if your kids like Legos. This set comes with one officer figure which has a detailed printed torso, a white hat and a gray walkie-talkie. In addition to the officer this set comes with a speed gun which is very simple but is nice to have because it gives the officer a specific job to do (catch speeders). The Police Car itself is a fairly simple build and when finished it looks genuinely like a real Police cruiser. I'm sure somewhere in Amazon's small print there is information that most people do not have the time to read but I just want people to be very aware that prices might change on their wish lists. (115 lb. gal) but it does hurt I will tell ya that. I guess it could break if it was treated badly. Of course they are fun, they keep my son busy for hours especially since he has tons of these tracks. Educational, well yes in some way...my son has to figure out just how much track he needs, short, long, straight or curved to complete his track. So yes they have to think and re-do their track if it won't work out. I have seen my 7 year old have to think, ok if I put this piece here then what else will I need and that sort of thing. The set includes parts for building a small lawn tractor , a larger backhoe-type tractor that pulls a loading bin, a stable and grain hopper, and a barn-type shelter with a winch for loading the big tractor. Also included are 2 cows, a dog, 2 cats, various tools, 3 Lego people, and some other small accessories. My favorite thing about the set is the unique way that the items are interactive - the grain hopper has a removable lid and slide-out valve so that the pretend grains can be loaded and dumped, the big tractor pulls a dumper loading cart with fold-down sides and an open & close gate, the tractor's bucket is fully adjustable, and the aforementioned winch is completely usable for loading and unloading items.<br />The suggested age range for this set is 5-12 years, but my son definitely cannot build the items on his own. His attention span is not there yet for such construction (it took me a couple of hours to build everything for him and I have much experience with Legos) and the fine motor skills needed for handling and connecting/disconnecting the numerous small pieces are also beyond his current abilities. Parents of kids on the low end of the suggested age range should expect to provide significant help, which is of course part of the fun! The instructions are very, very well done, offering clear illustrations and making only small incremental changes with each illustrated step - they really could not be any clearer. The Legos also come packaged in several different bags which are numbered and correspond to the items desired for construction - a nice touch which makes initial building even easier.<br />I am a big Lego fan & this set is wonderful - very interactive, plenty of pieces for creating one's own designs, and large enough to build a big fun play set.
